Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – The Polish Institute of Film Art (PISF) founded in July, should have its financial plan for 2006 approved till the end of November. The institute arises controversies because it budget will be generated by cable TV operators, satellite platforms, cinemas and film distributors. Besides, Agnieszka Odorowicz, its head, supervised the law founding PISF when she was deputy Minister of Culture.

The institute should spend PLN 60-70m (EUR 15.5-18.1m) for film production, including at least 20-30 percent for debuts, Agnieszka Odorowicz said.

In her opinion, those funds will allow to double the number of films produced in Poland. Today, 15-18 feature films. About 30 should be made in 2006 thanks to subsidies. This year’s budget of PISF will amount to about PLN 100m. About PLN 5-6m will be spent to co-finance screenplays, PLN 10m for film promotion, the rest: for film festivals or distribution. The costs of running the institute will amount to PLN 4m. Agnieszka Odorowicz stressed that those costs will be covered from the budget and will still be PLN 3.5m lower than money spent by three film agencies which were merged to build PISF.

PISF head said that it will be commercial movies which will be supported.

I would like 8 of 10 films subsidised by the institute to have chances for big audience. There is nothing wrong in giving funds for commercial productions. If a film is profitable, the subsidy is paid back to the institute, Agnieszka Odorowicz said.
