Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – The Ministry of Finance is going to raise the excise duty paid for fuel and tobacco.

The fuel excise duty will grow PLN 0.25 per liter. This means a comeback to the levels from the year 2005.

“We plan to come back to the level from the year 2005. We want the change to start on January 1 2007”, Miroslaw Barszcz, the deputy Minister of Finance said.

In September 2005, the government cut the duty by PLN 0.25.

Meanwhile, the tobacco excise duty is going to grow by some dozen percentage points each year.

“We plan it to reach the minimal EU rate in 2009”, Miroslaw Barszcz added.

He reminded that before the end of the year 2008, the transitional period ends for Poland to use lower tobacco excise for tobacco products. According to the deputy minister, today the duty amounts to PLN 75 for 1,000 cigarettes and 31 percent of the maximal price per pack. The minimal rate in the EU amounts to EUR 64.
