(Puls Biznesu)–GlaxoSmithKlien Pharmaceuticals (GSK) estimated that medicine market in Poland will grow 4-5 percent this year. ‘I expect GSK sales to grow 9-14 percent. Half of the result will be achieved thanks to anti-flu meidicines which strongly influence our sales’, Mark Loughran, GSK CEO said. Last year, sales fell 3.7 percent to PLN 1.2 billion (EUR 308.9 million), and GSK market share dropped to

7.4 percent, although the company is still the market leader. Mark Loughran explained that weaker sales were result of low level of infections and the clash concerning margins and prices between Polish government and pharmaceutical producers.

‘The results of the fourth quarter of 2004 and the 10-percent growth in the first two months of 2005, show that we can come back to previous growth rate. We want to introduce new forms of some medicines, and two, maybe three totally new cardiological and neurological medicines’, GSK CEO explained.

The company’s plant in Poznan, western Poland, is using only 35 percent of its capacity because of falling exports. GSK invested in Poland over USD 400 m (EUR 302.4 m). ‘In the first years, we moved production of 76 medicines to the Polish plant. We developed the plant and now we cannot take advantage of that’, Mark Loughran complained.
