Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – The management of Gliwice GM plant knows nothing about decreasing the production there. However, the company has recently lost the competition to produce Opel Meriva.

General Motors, the U.S. automotive company may cut the production of Opel Atra in its European plants. The news was revealed by Klaus France, the head of European trade unions in “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. Cuts would consider four plants where Astra and Zafira are manufactured. One of them is in Gliwice.

“I have no information about cutting our production” Romual Rytwinski, the head of GM Poland said.

In his opinion, the capacity will not change.

“This year, 180,000 cars will be made in our plant. Half of them will be Opel Zafira. The rest will be divided between Opel Astra and Agila”, the CEO added.

The employment, which amounts to 3,000 people, should not change. Last year, Gliwice plant produced 130,000 cars.

However, according to Reuters agency quoting Carl-Peter Forster, the head of GM Europe, the concern will launch production of its new Meriva model in Saragossa, Spain. Before, the company was considering the Polish plant where labor costs are 3.5 times lower.

“Gliwice presented a good offer. Unfortunately, the reason to choose Spain was the investment made there. The plant in Saragossa has a line ready to produce Meriva. GM would have to invest much in Poland. Lower labor costs would not equal this”, Romuald Rytwinski said.

He added that the Polish plant will take part in another internal tender to produce a new model this year.
