Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – Mobile operators may earn a  lot offering m-payment services. They don’t cooperate, however, while cooperation is the only way to be successful.

M-payments is one of the ways for mobile operators to increase sales. A mobile may become electronic purse while paying for coffee, pizza or parking.

“Selling services will be one of the main sources of income of mobile operators in the future”, Stefan Kaminski, CEO of the national economic chamber of electronics and telecommunication said.

Today, such services are just a fraction of the market. But this may change soon.

“We get dozens of offers from fast-food restaurants, cinemas, or hotels”, Marcin Gruszka, Play spokesman said.

Worldwide payments with a mobile will amount to USD 2bn this year and USD 22bn in 2011, according to Juniper Research.

mPay, a company from the group of listed ATM, which is already operating in Poland, wants to have 1m clients till the end of next year and 9m clients, or 30 percent of the population, within 5-6 years. Today, mPay services are available in nearly 100 points in 10 cities.

“Within 12 months, we should reach agreements with banks and retailers. The service should become widely available in 2009”, Dariusz Boduch from Polkomtel said.

Polkomtel is cooperating with mPay.

Sounds great but there is one problem. Operators should work together to have unanimous standards. Otherwise the service won’t be popular. PTK Centertel, operator of Orange and Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa, operator of Era and Heyah, signed a letter of intent at the end of November. P4, operator of Play, said it is going to offer cooperation to Centertel and PTC. Polkomtel, however, believes that the operators should adopt the standards it is already using.
