The infrastructure ministry is working on a project to resolve the problem of telecommunications licencing fees. The independent operators want to convert installments in telecommunications licence fees to amounts that are to be paid in investments. The ministry has only got two weeks to come up with some answers as the next installment is due at the end of this month. These debts now come to EUR400m and the cash strapped government is not keen on giving up on its income. However payment could force many of the independent operators into the bankruptcy courts. To further complicate this issue, licence fees were scrapped at the beginning of this year and now anyone can start a telecoms company paying a small fee for a permit. This, the operators claim, is very good reason why they should not have to pay any more.
