Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – For eight months now, the Agency of Agricultural Restructuring and Modernisation (ARiMR) has been receiving applications to co-finance investment projects in processing and marketing agricultural products. The applications may be submitted till the end of 2006 but so many companies are interested that the PLN 1.9 billion (EUR 461.1 m) of EU funds will soon end. ‘ARiMR’s regional units have received 456 applications for over PLN 936 m, or 49.3 percent of all funds’, Iwona Musial, ARiMR’s spokesperson said. She added that 67 applications have already been approved, and agreements for PLN 240 m have already been signed. 48 further applications will be viewed this week. The chances of an application to be approved are very big, only 5 of them have been rejected so far but one may submit a corrected application again.

Mlekovita diary company is one of the first beneficiary of the funds. ‘We have signed an agreement in February. We have managed to receive maximum amount of financing – PLN 20 m. The money will be transferred to our bank account when the investment will have been finished’, Dariusz Sapinski, Mlekovita CEO said. The company plans an investment worth PLN 50 m, including new production lines. ‘I am glad we have received EU subsidy but if the Polish food sector is to be important in the EU, the maximum amount of PLN 20 m for one company is too little’, Dariusz Sapinski added. In his opinion, Western European food producers received much bigger subsidies in the past.

The funds are ending but may be increased. Iwona Musial said that it was possible to shift funds from other funds if the amount ends too quickly. ‘Polish food sector must modernise and consolidate to reach the level of its rivals from old EU. It would be good if Polish companies took advantage of all EU funds for investments. I also hope they will be accessible equally to big, medium-sized and small companies’, Andrzej Gantner, the director of the Polish Federation of Food Producers said.
