It is now seeming increasingly likely that the Swedish Preem will seek a buyer for its chain of eighty petrol stations in Poland.

The Swedes are rumoure to have already sent offers to several of the largest players on the fuel market. Sales will not be easy as several of these stations are only franchised meaning that the one thing on offer is a logo. Preem has not commented on this information although Igor Pawel, development director for Preem Polska says that several options are now being considered.

A decision on the fate of Preem in Poland is not likely until the fate of the Gdańsk refinery is known.

If the refinery were to end up in the hands of PKN Orlen then there would be a need for an alternative supplier of fuel in northern Poland and Preem would be in a position to exploit this opportunity.

At the same time Preem will try to keep its operating costs down to an absolute minimum. With this in mind it signed an agreement with the Gdansk refinery on 15 March to buy at least 250m litres of engine oil this year with a value in excess of PLN500m.
