Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – This is just the beginning – that’s how analysts comment the fact that Lukoil bought Polish gas stations.

Russian Lukoil has bought European and Polish gas stations run under Jet brand from ConocoPhillips. The company has once tried to enter the Polish fuel market before. It wanted to buy Rafineria Gdanska refinery in 2002 but then the government blocked the transaction.

“This time, there are no reasons to block it. It is nor a refinery but several dozens gas stations. The transaction is no danger to the Polish energy security. You must remember, however, that it is just the beginning of the Russian expansion in EU. The situation may get dangerous when they try to increase their assets radically”, Piotr Naimski, the deputy Minister of Economy said.

Analysts try to forecast how the transaction will influence the market.

“The question is what will Lukoil do. If the stations remain discount ones, independent gas stations will be in a difficult situation. Big players will not be adversely affected by 82 gas stations. But Lukoil will want to develop its network and then the situation may change radically”, Aurelia Kuran-Puszkarska, the expert of the fuel market estimated.

“Of course we will try to develop our network in Poland. The stations we have acquired are just the beginning”, Vladimir Yatrow from Lukoil Polska said.
