Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – The Polish Chamber of Liquid Fuels (PIPP) wants individual gas stations to merge into three chains in order to successfully resist the domination of big companies.

Gas stations which are not part of big chains, have difficulties on the Polish market among growing competition and falling margins. Their number is falling and will fall even steeper unless they are modernized before 2007 according to EU rules. PIPP believes however that there is a remedy.

“The sector must consolidate. We are already starting to work over it, and the first effects should be visible in 12 months”, Halina Pupacz, PIPP CEO said.

In her opinion, it doesn’t make sense to found just one brand.

“Mainly because of high transportation costs. It would be best to found three chains operating in different parts of Poland. There are the foundations of two chains. Delfin company has been operating for three years. It comprises of 29 stations, and 100 new agreements are being prepared. Huzar chain is also operating with three stations, and 11 agreements queuing”, Ms. Pupacz added.

The plans of the chamber provide for consolidating 1,500 entities.

“Their market share should amount to 10-15 percent at least”, Halina Pupacz said.

The project will not be possible without an outside support.

“We need to find a financial partner. A strong wholesaler of fuels would be a good solution”, Halina Pupacz said.

It is not the first time that PIPP plans to build gas stations chains. In 2003, Autelia Kuran-Puszkarska, the former CEO of PIPP, forecast that unless a consolidation is conducted within two years, the owners of small stations would become marginal.
