Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) Several months ago, Wal-Mart, the world¹s largest retailer, said it was going to launch business in Poland. British newspapers say that ASDA, the British retail brand owned by Wal-Mart, is getting ready to build a big network of totally new shops. Wal-Mart has decided to launch discount business, more exactly hard discount shops offering up to 2,500 products, in 95 percent sold under the retailer¹s brand.

Analysts are not surprised.

In Poland, discounts sell 10 percent of FMCG, and keeps growing, Magdalena Zimna from GfK Polonia research company said.

In Germany, the share amounts to 40 percent. Moreover, 35-40 percent of products are sold under retailer¹s name in Western Europe, while in Poland the share is below 20 percent. Foreign companies seem to notice and they launch several dozen new discount shops. The retailers include: Biedronka, Leader Price, Plus, Lidl and Netto.
