The acquisition this summer of Ster Century multiplex cinemas by Cinema City which belongs to the Israeli International Theatres will have a major effect on the movie business in this country. The fusion of Ster Century and Cinema City makes this the dominant operator in the country and has put a lot of distance between it and Multikino which belongs to ITI and UCI. To thicken the plot somewhat, UCI has been buying multiplex cinemas in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary as way of entering these markets.
On paper the growth of Cinema City is impressive. However three of Ster Centurys cinemas are in Warsaw and one is in Wroclaw. Cinema City Poland intends to build more cinemas in Warsaw.
Cinema City now has 86 screens. The price that Cinema City paid is not known but the price of bringing the four multiplexes on line was in the order of PLN25m PLN40m.
