Fuel pipeline under consideration

A look at the map of north west Poland will show that the city of Świnoujście is in a somewhat unfortunate location from the point of view of communications being linked to the rest of Poland only by ferry. Trade from the petrol base Porta Petrol, for example, which is on the island of Uznam is carried only by boats.

Carrying fuels in this way is clearly a costly solution and now the owners of Porta Petrol are considering a pipeline to the island of Wolin which is in turn connected to the 'mainland' in various places.

A company could be formed between the authorities of Szczecin port and PKN Orlen in order to exploit this possibility. The 1,000 metre pipeline under the Świna river would cost around PLN20m — PLN30m.

The investors are however worried about 'ecological' protestors. Due to their interference the petrol facility was only able to start working at the beginning of last month although it could have opened several years ago. The construction of the port cost a lot more than PLN100m, several million of which was due to the extra costs involved in the protest action from the Estuarium green grouping.
