The conflict between Russia and Ukraine forced the Polish government to choose strategy for gas diversification. The government said yesterday, a sea terminal of liquefied natural gas (LNG) would be built and national gas exploration increased.

We have started talks for projects in both northern and eastern, but not Russian, directions. We will also soon launch construction works of an LNG terminal, PM Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz said.

Piotr Wozniak, the Minister of Economy, said that within four years, contracts would be signed with different companies to make Poland independent from Russian gas pipelines.

Bartimpex and E.ON Ruhrgas are adjusting their strategies to the new plans.

LNG terminal should be the basis of gas diversification. It’s not possible to talk about big gas deliveries from Norway. Terminal construction may last 6-7 years so Poland should joint the German project in Wilhelmshaven. However, it would be necessary to build pipeline between Poland and Germany. Bartimpex and Ruhrgas have a project of such pipeline, Stefan Geron, Bartimpex development director said.

In his opinion, it would not disturb the plans to build LNG terminal near Gdansk.

Marek Kossowski, the former PGNiG’s CEO criticizes these plans.

We thought about cooperation with the Germans only if it was impossible in Poland. If you may invest PLN 2 billion, which PGNiG has got, in Poland and create jobs, why spend these funds in Germany, Marek Kossowski said.

In his opinion, the liquefied natural gas is real competition to Russian fuel.
