The EU is a fact of life. It is not going to go away. It is true that most Poles admit that they know little about it and indeed are a little afraid of it. In the arguments about foreigners buying land and work permits for Poles after EU accession the global aims of the union have been forgotten.
Introducing the euro into union is yet another step towards the full integration of the continent that began not long after the war ended. Is this the beginning of the United States of Europe? Perhaps not as this little example will demonstrate. We telephoned around fifty EU officials and asked them to send us photographs of the ceremonial inauguration of the euro. All of the people telephoned had it in their power to send these photographs. None did. And the tax payers go on paying.
