Medycyna i Farmacja, the company that was formed from the chemists that were separated from Warsaw based Cefarm, still continue to hope that they will be able to form a chain despite the fact that this is now forbidden under a law which states that the only owner of chemists’ stores are qualified pharmacists.

This law, which is effective as of this April, was introduced by nationalist elements in the previous government who sought to bar Poland to foreign pharmaceutical chains.

However it also bars Polish chains.

Warsaw based Medycyna i Farmacja hoped to raise the capital required from venture capital funds.

Their plan is to get around the law by not being the legal owner but an investor.

The stores will be run by qualified pharmacists.

The cost of bringing one such store into business will be around PLN600,000.

Enterprise Investors is believed to be prepared to invest PLN50m in such a project.
