No miracle over the budget

Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – Experts are disappointed with the budget corrected by the new government.

Since it was summoned, the new government has repeated that it has too little time to substantially improve the budget for the year 2008. However, before elections, representatives of the Citizens’ Platform (PO) would promise to cut deficit by PLN 5-8bn (EUR 1.4-2.2bn) and to cut spending.

“I’m disappointed first of all with the scale of reducing the deficit. I hoped it would be much more than PLN 1.5bn”, Ryszard Petru, Bank BPH chief economist said.

“The government had a chance to reduce the deficit”, Grzegorz Maliszewski, Bank Millennium pointed out.

PO offers explanation.

“PLN 1.5bn reduction is just the first step showing what will be done in upcoming years. We were limited by wage increases for teachers negotiated earlier. But the deficit will be smaller in 2009 budget”, Krystyna Skowronska from PO said.

The spending is also not cut substantially. It will grow similarly it used to in previous years. Savings generated thanks to giving less money to public entities were not enough for economists.

“You cannot save much on administration”, Jeremi Mordasewicz from PKPP Lewiatan said.

“We are aware of the fact that in order to really change public finances, we need to change the tax system. We had no time for that this year, however”, Krystyna Skowronska answered.
