Cezary Banasiński, the head of competition watchdog Urząd Ochrony Konkurencji i Konsumentów, and Alexander Schaub, the director of competition policy in the EU agree that one of the greatest problems facing this country on EU entry will be the restructuring of the steel sector and in particular that of state aid for it.
The economy ministry believes that restructuring the sector need not be completed before Polish entry to the EU, rather there is until 2010. The ministry is hoping to convince the EU that some state aid is necessary and Brussels may agree to this if it is convinced it is not just sending good money after bad and that that aid will not be just a bottomless pit.
