On opening the Warsaw stock market immediately gained as investors no doubt saw bargains but then others saw the opportunity for profit taking and the index slid to its lowest level for nine months. Later in the day it recovered and the WIG20 closed up 1.3 percent at 1,098 points and the WIG up 0.8 percent at 13,070 points.

Not so Germany and France. The DAX lost a further 0.4 percent and the CAC40 one percent.

In Poland, construction companies tended to slide whilst banks regained a little of what they lost on Monday. BRE Bank however, despite gains by Elektrim and Szeptel in which it has a considerable holding, lost a further one percent.

The technical subindex gained 0.9 percent, largely following the fortunes of the main blue chip WIG20.
