The sea border protection system worth EUR 40m may turn out to be just an expensive toy. Experts alarm that it will be very easy to disturb with equipment worth PLN 1,000 (EUR 256). This is because the Polish Border Guard authorities have decided to connect the radars with supervision centers via radio connection in unlicensed bands. Specialists believe that such systems should operate on leased bands. Otherwise the disturbances will happen often. Smugglers or amateurs will be able to do it.
In December, Brussels is supposed to evaluate how advanced Poland is in its preparations to enter the Schengen system. This would make it possible to abandon controls of the Poles on EU borders. The system of sea border protection is part of a project laid out in 2004. Polish borders were supposed to be EU borders as well, the system is worth EUR 100m. The land protection system based on sensors and cameras worth EUR 52.5m did not come beyond the tender phase. The sea protection system worth EUR 40m is delayed. Besides, the Border Guard failed to provide fiber optic cables connecting the radars with the bases.
