New plans for petrochemicals
Shortly before the elections the SLD-UP coalition said that it would postpone the privatisation of the chemical industry until it was consolidated around PKN Orlen. A new conception sees a role for Ciech which would manage the group and its sales.
Many of those in the industry have been arguing for a role for PKN Orlen as an investor which would buy a stake in Ciech in which the state still has the dominant share.
Consolidation of the sector would involve the Tarnów, Kędzierzyn, Puławy and Police chemical plants. It would also include Włocławek based Anwil which already belongs to Orlen and Oświęcim based Dwory.
However this now depends on the sale of the remainder of the treasury's stake in PKN Orlen not going ahead. The SLD will need to form a government quickly to stop the sale.
