The Warsaw stock market kicked off the New Year with an increase of 0.4 percent on the WIG to take it to 13,977 points and 0.7 percent on the WIG20 to take it to 1,217 points.

This increase was despite declines in other European markets. However it should be remembered that most traders did not return to work yesterday and therefore business will not begin seriously until Monday. Turnover was only PLN118m.

Elektrim gained 6.2 percent despite having had to ask its creditors for more time. Last year the company lost eighty percent of its value. Elektrim accounted for over one quarter of all trade with PKN Orlen and Pekao SA accounting for a further third between them.
