Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) - The Ministry of Health is preparing a bill which will adversely affect both smokers and tobacco companies. The latter are as usually against any restrictions. Poland may follow the suit of some Western European countries and restrict the law concerning smoking in public places."There is an amendment of the health protection law being prepared in the Ministry in order to protect against tobacco use, which will, among others, widen the smoke-free zones (one-room restaurants will join), regulate smoking in public transport (separate carriages for the smokers) and modify the warnings on cigarette boxes (graphic illustrations)", Tadeusz Parchimowicz responsible for smoking in the Ministry of Health said. This is not the only bill limiting smoking. Tadeusz Cymanski, a Law and Justice (PiS) MP is preparing his own bill. "We are agains law regulations which exclude the smokers from the environment. Restaurant operators will also lose due to the changes while implementing graphic warnings on the boxes is an expensive and complicated operation", Jerzy Skiba, the CEO of the National Association of Tobacco Industry said."The problems of smoking in public places may be solved with reason and practical solutions like well air-conditioned zones for the smokers and non-smokers", Grazyna Sokolowska, the director responsible for corporate and legal issues in Imperial Tobacco Polska added. In her opinion, the graphic sings are also not necessary. However, the plans of the Polish Ministry of Health seem liberal in comparison to some Western European countries. In Ireland, Norway and New Zealand it is totally forbidden to smoke in public places. In Ireland, it is forbidden to smoke in a car if it belongs to someone's company.
