Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) - The Left was first before PO (Civic Platform) to present to the Polish parliament (Sejm) a bill on removing impediments for super- and hypermarkets.

It is almost certain that one of the biggest legal misunderstandings on  will finally disappear. It refers to the law that has been successfully blocking major investments, as it had allowed building superstores bigger than 400 sq m. According to the representatives of commercial networks it completely paralysed the development of large-area supermarkets. Now all the political parties agree that it needs to be withdrawn. Although it was PO that has advocated against this law most vehemently and their bill is ready, it has not reached Sejm yet. The Left and the Democrats (LiD) took advantage of the situation and their bill is already an official Sejm document.

Tomasz Garbowski from LiD argues that the act has brought about more harm than benefits. There have been many complaints from the local authorities and entrepreneurs that not only did it stop the development of super- and hypermarket but also the process of market consolidation. It was also a cause of the decreased budget income from VAT and the excise and hindered development of many related branches, such as construction, catering, transport and shipping, etc.

We support this bill and hope that its importance will be recognized by the government, says Andrzej Arendarski, the Chairperson of the Polish Chamber of Commerce.
