May inflation which amounted to 2.3 percent year-on-year and not 2.1 percent as expected by analysts, is the result of food prices increase, Zyta Gilowska, deputy PM and Minister of Finance believes.
“The surprise was due to one-time jump of fruit and vegetable prices. I suspect that wholesalers took advantage of the psychological effect after recent ground-frost and they raised prices”, Zyta Gilowska believes.
In her opinion, this trend will not continue. According to the central statistical office GUS, vegetable prices rose 3.8 percent in May while fruit prices grew 12.5 percent. Food was 1.3 percent more expensive. The forecast of the Ministry of Finance concerning CPI at the end of this year, has not been changed and amounts to 2.6 percent.
