According to forecasts, all Polish airports had 19.4m passengers this year, or 4m more than in 2006. Nearly half of the passengers were served by Warsaw airport (9.1m). Next year, the result may be a double-digit number. That’s why the ranking of Central European airports has changed. Budapest airport will have up to 8.5m passengers this year, or only 0.3m more than last year. Experts believe it is because of political turmoil. The distance between Warsaw and Prague is shrinking. It fell to 200,000 passengers. Prague had 12.4m, or 7 percent more passengers, mainly thanks to the removal of Sky Europe from Krakow to Prague.
Warsaw’s results could have been better, had the new terminal been ready earlier.
“Providing that the second terminal is ready, in three years Warsaw could do better than Prague and have some 14m passengers”, Tomasz Dziedzic from the institute of tourism said.
If a new airport in Modlin near Warsaw was built, Poland’s capital would do even better.
“It could exceed Prague within two years”, Tomasz
Dziedzic believed.
