Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – Dell launches construction works in Lodz today. The Polish army welcomes the investor in a very special way – by excluding it from a tender.
The Polish army wants to buy computers with mice and keyboards connected with old-technology switchers. In result, U.S. Dell could not take part in one of the biggest tenders for PCs. The tender is worth PLN 10m (EUR 2.6m) and was announced by the Ministry of Defense (MON) and the Military Property Agency in October 2006. Intertrading Systems Technology, Dell’s partner, protested against the specification which requires mice and keyboards to be installed with PS/S ports which are not used in modern PCs.
Piotr Paszkowski, MON spokesman said that AMW should be asked questions concerning the tender.
“The Agency is obliged to use the requirements of MON where PS/2 is enumerated. We did not change this provision in order not to shift the deadline to submit the offers because this would cause that the tender would be cancelled”, Jolanta Plieth-Cholewinska, AMW spokeswoman said.
Dell Polska refused to comment. Another company which submitted its protest in the same tender is AMD, the producer of processors. AMD pointed out that AMW wants processors tested in an old technology.
Meanwhile, today Dell launches construction works under its EUR 200m plant in Lodz. The second facility in Europe will employ 3,000 people. It will reach full capacity in 2011. Dell's contractors will employ at least 3,000 people more. According to some estimates, this investment project will create 12,000 new jobs. The Polish government supported this project with EUR 53m.
