Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – High energy costs make Impexmetal consider to close part of its production in HAK.

In the first days of November, Impexmetal supervisory board will decide about the future of electrolysis department, part of Konin aluminium plant (HAK).

“There are several scenarios. We may close the electrolysis department altogether, we may close only half of it”, Piotr Szeliga, Impexmetal CEO said.

The reason for this is that energy constitutes 45 percent of costs in this department. Meanwhile, next year, energy prices will grow substantially. Besides, HAK income depends on aluminium prices which have been falling in recent years. Thirdly, HAK exports 58 percent of its production and despite recent depreciation, zloty remains very strong.

“We estimate that electrolysis department will be unprofitable next year”, Piotr Szeliga explained.

He stressed that no decision has been made yet. There are 230 people employed in this department.
