Let the power be (not) with us

Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) - Investments worth billions of zloty are in danger. Will there be an energy shortfall? Thousands of additional megawatts of energy were supposed to be produced in Poland. The truth is cruel. Many power plants simply won’t be built because power companies can’t meet the orders. To have a block of 800MW, you have to wait till 2013.

Electrabel, EDF or Vattenfal are looking for sites to build new power plants. Tauron, Enea, PAK or PGE promise to develop and modernize their existing plants. Many of these projects may not be implemented at all.

“The market has seriously changed in the last two years. It’s not the investor’s market but the market of construction companies and equipment producers. It takes several dozens months to receive a pot, up from over 10 months. Construction companies lack employers. The market starts to be very tough for potential investments”, Katarzyna Muszkat, PAK power plants CEO said.

Equipment producers and construction companies thrive.

“The demand for blocks with 800MW of capacity is very big. If an investor wanted to make an order today, we might deliver it in 2013”, Piotr Dobrowolski, energy director at Siemens said.

Robert Hardejewski, Alstom Power power plant sales director, believes that pot deliveries are the main problem.

“The demand in Europe in 2009 is estimated at 1.5m hours monthly, or twice as much as today. It’s impossible to double the output within two years”, Robert Hardejewski said.

Steel plants can’t meet the orders for pots and turbines.

“You have to wait 16-18 months today, or two times longer than in the past. And the queue is getting longer and longer”, Alstom representative added.
