According to the data from the central statistical office GUS, companies had 251,000 job offers in the second quarter, or 10 percent fewer than in the same period of last year.
“Recent years have been good for workers. Companies used to invest, create new jobs, demand kept growing. Now, the situation starts to revise. The number of free positions is falling down”, Karolina Sedzimir-Domanowska, PKO BP economist explained.
The reason is slowing economy.
“Companies can feel it. They are less inclined to increase employment. Why invest in new jobs which soon may be redundant? This is especially true among exporters who have problems because of strong zloty”, she added.
The situation is even worse because of the Poles coming back to the country.
“The UK and Ireland already see the economic crisis and it’s much more difficult to get a good job there than it used to be. In addition, the zloty keeps appreciating, which means that wages abroad are falling. More and more Poles come back”, Marta Petka, Raiffeisen Bank economist said.
In addition, the economic slowdown is only starting in Poland. This means that wages won’t grow as fast as they used to.
“Next year, wages will grow by 7-8 percent as compared to 10-12 percent in
recent months”, PKO BP economist said.
