The German sugar concern Pfeifer und Langen has announced that it hopes to merge its eleven refineries sometime next year and thus cut costs by an estimated five to seven percent.
In 1995-99 it bought refineries in the Leszno region at Środa Wielkopolska, Gostyń, Kościan, Miejska Górka, Głogów and Góra.
Once these refineries have been successfully merged, the Germans plan to add those it recently bought belonging to the Kalisz — Koniń group in which it will be placing PLN70m in investments in the first half of next year.
The company claims that the fusions will not mean job cuts.
Pfeifer und Langen currently has a 16 percent share of the sugar market in this country. It is the largest foreign investor in the sector in Poland.
