Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – Poland will not limit SO2 emission to the level promised in the EU accession agreement. Energy companies have been warning about it for a year now – so far with no effect. ‘We have not touched on this issue in our talks with EU’, Wojciech Jaworski, the head of environment protection instruments in the Ministry of Environment said. Brussels may even not know that the rules of the accession treaty are inconsistent. On the one hand, Poland pledges to limit SO2 emissions, and on the other, EU agrees for derogation.

Energy companies fear that when the government realises it cannot meet treaty pledges, they will be burdened with it. The problem is that if Poland limits the emission, in 2008 the country will have too little electric energy. ‘We estimate 2,000 MW will be missing’, Grzegorz Gorski, Electrabel Polska CEO said. Polish Committee of Electric Energy (PKEE) said that the deficit will amount to 8.8 TWh.

The Ministry of Environment has an idea. ‘We are preparing product emission limits programme. This system would support modern power sources and enable operations of the older, less ecological ones’, Wojciech Jaworski said. The strategy will be shown to energy companies this week. ‘If we agree for a solution, the proposal will be presented to the government. Then, within two weeks we could start talks with the EU’, Wojciech Jaworski added.Poland/Enterprises/Energy/Enlargement
