The 25-km-long section of A1 highway from Gdansk to Swarozyn near Tczew was launched a year ago.
„There was no fatal accident which shows to what extent highways improve security”, Marcin Trzcinski from GTC construction company which built and now operates the road said.
A1 is one of the most frequently used roads. There are up to 25,000 vehicles using it every day. In Pomorskie region, there were 126 fatal accidents since January till September.
In Poland, accidents cost PLN 30bn every year. The General Directorate for
National Roads and Highways invested PLN 250m in highways this year. In 2009, it
plans to spend as much as PLN 350m. Poland has applied at the European
Investment Bank to get a credit to build safe crossroads, etc. The credit may
amount to EUR 130m, the investment will be two times higher.
