Last week’s news from “The Sunday Times” that Dell allegedly was talking about selling its Lodz plant to Taiwan Foxconn arose unrest in Poland. The investor, however, assured the government that these were rumors.
“We have dementi from the main manager of Dell in Poland”, Rafal Baniak, deputy minister of economy calms down.
The ministry needed it because it is currently increasing the subsidy for the company, which already was the highest in the history. Dell which invested EUR 200m in Lodz was supposed to get PLN 133.5m (EUR 39.9m) of grant in the years 2007-12.
“The company will get EUR 4.5m more. The government will approve of the amended program tomorrow or next week”, Rafal Baniak said.
Bigger subsidy will put an end to a two year clash between Dell and PKP railway operator on whose ground the IT plant has been built. According to the letter of intent, Dell was supposed to buy the land from PKP. The initial evaluation amounted to EUR 3m but PKP delayed the tender and when it finally announced it, the price jumped to EUR 9m. Dell did not agree to pay more. Meanwhile, PKP did not sign the letter of intent and did not feel obliged to meet its provisions.
