Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – Sailors may count for tax privileges. The Maritime Economy Ministry wants to encourage them to work in Poland.

The Ministry wants to convince sailors and ship owners to use the Polish flag. Today, out of 120 ships, only 2 are registered in Poland. The bill of the law will be consulted among Polish ministries at the end of January.

“We want to divide the sailor wage into the basic wage plus the sea bonus which would be tax-free. The rate between the basic wage and the bonus would be individually negotiated by the sailors and ship owners”, Rafal Wiechecki, the Maritime Economy Minister said.

Additional privileges would concern lower social insurance payments – the basis for them would be 50 percent of the wage.

Rafal Wiechecki believes that the relief will increase the revenues to the budget.

“When the ship is registered abroad it does not pay taxes at all. When the law comes into force, there will be revenues generated by the sailors”, the minister explains.

There are 4,000 sailors in Poland. However there are other groups which do not pay taxes in Poland, including, doctors, nurses, or steel plant workers who often work abroad. Should they demand the same rules, the government may have a problem.
