Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – A giant project of the Schengen Information System (SIS) worth EUR 172 million, including new departments in ministries, and the modernisation and development of IT systems in several governmental institutions is being launched. SIS should connect the data from the registers of the state, police, boarder watch, tax authorities, and the courts. It would also enable the EU peers of all the above institutions use the date. In practice, this means no boarder control with the other EU countries.

According to the schedule, the project should be prepared till April 2005. At the end of April, the first IT works would be launched. Most funds will come from EU’s Schengen Fund. The Polish government will add just EUR 24 million.

The largest expenditures worth nearly EUR 100 million will go for the police telecommunication network, IT systems and computers. The register of ID cards and cars will be incorporated into the system. The data from Polish registers and systems will be transmitted to a central data base. The system will work in 2008.
