Gas competition

The consortium that makes up the north western gas terminal concern, Konsorcjum Zachodniopomorski Terminal LNG, has announced that it will continue work on its project which would bring gas to Poland from countries such as Algeria, Libya, Nigeria and Norway despite the recently signed contract to import gas from Denmark in the Baltic Pipe project.

The consortium is made up of Alstom, Fast Grup Elektroman as well as the Japanese Mitsui and its British subsidiary Arcadia which has a twenty percent stake in the world LNG market.

The consortium claims that within ten weeks it will finish work on the project and then will look for financial backers. It hopes to be able to import between two and five billion cubic metres of gas into Poland each year.

An agreement was signed on 2 July between the Polish and Danish governments to import 2bn cubic metres of gas each year through the Baltic Pipe project. This project could be cancelled by the next government however if it is not it will lead to a fight. The problem is that both projects see their base market as being in north western Poland and are likely to compete hard for this market.
