Język angielski oferuje nam liczne wyrażenia, dzięki którym możemy opisać naszą samodzielność:

- on my own; by myself:
Is it wrong to learn English from Internet and on my own?
I wasn't able to repair the car by myself, so I asked a mechanic to help me.

Oba te wyrażenia oznaczać też mogą chęć bądź konieczność przebywania w samotności:
- My previous and present partners have also never understood why I sometimes just want to be by myself.
- I am now married but still enjoy some quiet time on my own.

Jeśli usłyszymy od kogoś: "you are on your own", możemy być pewni, że nie otrzymamy od niego pomocy i będziemy pozostawieni sami sobie z realizacją określonego zadania:
- If you are on your own without a mobile phone, shout for help if people are nearby, or go and get help.
- I can get an application for you, but after that you're on your own.

Gdy wykonamy trudne zadanie samodzielnie, możemy użyć słówek "unaided" lub "single-handedly":
- A teenage girl who sailed around the world unaided was greeted by thousands of cheering supporters on her return home to Sydney.
- The Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner will attempt to become the first human to break the sound barrier unaided by a vehicle.
- Former Polish President Lech Walesa said that the pilot of Saturday's doomed flight would not have made the decision single-handedly.

"Unaided" pojawia się też wówczas, gdy chcemy powiedzieć, że ktoś może poruszać się lub oddychać samodzielnie:
- He is stable, conscious and can breathe unaided.
- This operation could help children with cerebral palsy (=porażenie mózgowe) to walk unaided.

A gdy dzięki ciężkiej, samodzielnej pracy zostaniemy już milionerami, będą o nas mówić z użyciem wyrażenia "self-made" - tak jak w przypadku często spotykanego wyrażenia "self-made man" (człowiek, który do wszystkiego doszedł własną pracą):
- The average self-made millionaire works 60 hours a week.
- Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is possibly the world's most successful self-made businessman.
